Chanmas 2018

Chanmas Traditions

Another Chanmas approaches! Will you celebrate the 25th of December, the Chanmas way?

Here are some nifty traditions to help you get started!

Spike a drink*- (I.e. your hot chocolate, your coffee, your water..?)

Torture your loved ones with the STAR WARS: Holiday Special.

Ignore food traditions of the 25th and go get sushi (or YOUR favorite food)

Wear something grossly festive to you. Black is a fine color for this day. (Reds are acceptable, as it represents the blood of your fallen enemies.)

Think of being a bat as you run around the house with your spooky blanket poised as wings!

Make sure you watch “holiday” themed MST3Ks. They will make you question Santa forever…

Draw a little something for yourself. If this is not your talent, make sure you do that special something that makes you feel good (cuddling an animal, writing poetry, singing karaoke…)

PLAY MARIO KART WITH FRIENDS. (if no friends play online or substitute with Animal Crossing and get an internet party going! Your collective sadness will make you happy. XD)

Pumpkin spiced something or Cranberry something goodie to eat. (Green Tea something gives you like a bonus of 20 HP.)

Give tribute to this man-

Venture Brothers Holiday Special is MUST.

Enjoy teas through the day. If no tea, make it coffee. OR ELSE. (but seriously if neither is your thing, that’s cool.)

Go out drinking with friends the night before! Sake is a plus! Hangovers a not so welcome bonus.*

If applicable dance mother fucker, dance! -let the spirit of Dave Gahan move you.

Text/message a Chan on this special day. (We hear she likes that a lot.)

Wine it up. Red, mulled… you decide!* (though do this after sushi or waaaay before. These 2 things might not be compatible… unless you just are that COOL.)

Praise Saint Bowie, because.

COLORS: Black, Red, Grey, and White. If you do green, make it Absinthe green!

MUSIC: Depeche Mode, Venture Bros. Holiday Music, Old school 80s video game music.

Give hugs, lots and lots of hugs and appreciate those who are around you and that are a part of your life. Which at the core of it all is what Chanmas is all about- that and having fun with your special people, even if they are far away. ❤

Make up your own tradition. Do it! I dare you! (It’s fun! Today can be your day!)

Also, if back in 1981, it’s December 25th, and your name is Charlene Free, give birth to a Chandra Free, kay? (Time travel tradition.)

PLAY THIS. (I always cry when I play it, for dumb reasons)

Also, no pouting!

Enjoy your Chanmas! ;D

*NOTE: If you don’t drink, change up these traditions with your favorite drink or food vice. It’s okay! We do not judge on Chanmas day. Point is to have fun your way. 😀

NEW MST3K Episode! The lowdown!

Thought I’d dust off the old blog and post about one of my favorite things, Mystery Science Theater and its return! For anybody who doesn’t know, I usually work on my comics and art while Mst3k plays in the background and is very influential to me!

I was one of the MST3K Kickstarter backers and got to view the first episode early! Let’s jump right in, won’t we?

WARNING: Spoilerish review sorta.

MST3K: S11 E01 Reptilicus

“Nobody calls him that…”

The Beginning! (Oh No the movie is starting again!!): We jump right into the story of why our new test subject, Jonah Heston (Jonah Ray) is selected. It’s a quick moving scene introducing Dr. Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day) and TV’s son of TV’s Frank (Patton Oswalt). All three of these characters are respectably charming and welcome to the MST3K canon. Also a cameo from Wil Weaton! (Is it just me but does It feel like that inner circle of nerds made this show ;)) It’s a nice start accented with all the neat miniatures/stop motion. There’s a new Doorway sequence that makes sense with living quarters and work rooms. It has a very Möbius/ Nostromos /Alien feeling! The Skeleton Crew gives a neat musical flair to everything and their design is a great throw back to old sci-fi movies with monsters with helmets and skulls. Costumes are on point with wonderful colors and design. The “commercial breaks” make me feel like it’s a real tv show. Very nice and authentic touch! Also the return of invention exchange and letters gives us that original format of Joel and early Mile episodes.

Host segments & Music: I felt like the host segments were to few to give us enough of who our cast is. Regardless they are fun! The musical number, “Every Country Has a Monster”, is catchy and fun. Certainly in the same vain as the Godzilla Genealogy Bop. I’m eager to see if there are more musical numbers, especially since we have so many musical things going on in the show! Did I hear the Canada song at some point?!? Yes I did! Also, “Mighty Science Theater” (the outro music) is soooo lovely.

New Voices: I think Hampton Yount does a great new Crow. He’s a nice mix of Trace and Bill and easy to figure out when he’s talking. Now Tom Servo (Baron Vaughn) and Jonah sound so similar to each other I have yet to figure out who is who sometimes. I’m sure with more views and as the show continues they will become more distinct to the ear. Did I mention Gypsy (Rebecca Hanson)! I agree with Joel’s need to update her. Giving her a real female voice and more mobility seems right and respectful vs. her almost dense male voice, and cumbersome original self. I will always love original Gypsy, but I’m totally digging new her.

Jokes: I was wondering if they were going to do this, but they did! They brought back old classic MST3K running jokes. Yay! If you’ve ever watched/listened to MST3K throughout you know they repeat jokes, their own lexicon if you will. But no fear, new updated jokes are here too. (Can you count how many Kickstarter jokes there is..?) I am concerned that they blow through the jokes a little too fast and not let them land naturally. It seems forced. Though on second viewing (aka having it on in the background) the jokes land better and starts feeling more like MST3K. If you’ve never seen MST3K, that’s okay, there’s tons of jokes to get but if you’re a long time fan you’re are treated well.

Movie: ugh. Not enough Repliticus!!! He really is the star of the movie and so badly shot too!!! Who doesn’t love a badly made monster? Yeah, this is the regular cheese MST3K is known for. Nice to have the original widescreen as the new format the show gives us. Joel said he always wanted to have the movies like this so you can have all the opportunities for jokes. Not much else to say about this other than; Petersen. :p

Final Thoughts: A good start. Feels a little forced at times, but the ingredients are here to make some real magic in the future. It’s not bad by any stretch, and so far earns its 11th season cred. I’m excited to see more host segments and how these characters are going to grow. It looks like that they doing a continuing story like the Mike episodes used to have (least that seems to be the set up) all while keeping that Joel charm. I highly recommend checking out the new MST3K this April 14th on Netflix when not only will the first episode be available but the whole season!!! Watch like crazy (if you like it) – Netflix will possibly renew it if it has lots of love.

Outro Card: YUP.

GOD MACHINE NEWS: The Angel & Devil Kitties are out of the bag!

Greetings & Salutations, my friends!

Long time since I’ve had real news to share, huh?

Well, I wanted to wait until I had something significant to tell you, and this is it:

I guess that’s a bit of news, huh? My new publisher! The God Machine has found a new home with Titan Comics. Not only is Titan going to put The God Machine back into print, but it’s also publishing The God Machine Volume 2 (my second significant bit of news!)!!! This is the same publisher who is now producing the Doctor Who comics, who is also publishing Lenore, along with a little title called Tank Girl… maybe you’ve heard of it? 😉 They’re an awesome creator-owned comics publisher based out of the UK, and are an imprint of the publishing company of Titan Books. If they weren’t before, they should definitely be on your radar now!

So, what does this mean? MAGICAL THINGS! So much magic that it’s going to cause blood to spurt from your nose… wait, that’s not magical at all… huh.

sith avatarFirst, we will be relaunching The God Machine. Starting with a deluxe edition of the first volume. It will include 20 new pages, a redrawn prologue, and new extras. No longer will it have the pin-ups and Doc Hammer’s foreword (sorry if you missed it). If you own the first edition I wanted you to have something special with that edition and if you pick up the new book I want you to be rewarded with new goodies & story. ALSO- I PROMISE NOT TO PULL A LUCAS WITH YOU ALL. (though now that i’ve said that I’m tempted to put a rock in front of R2-D2 who doesn’t even appear in my book…hmmm! ) >:Lawsuit:<

After we re-launch, we will be driving into the much anticipated volume 2. It’s a doozy! ❤

No dates yet, as we are currently working out publishing schedules. However, official news & dates will be announced at this year’s New York Comic-Con (which, yes, I will be there in artist alley!)

—And that’s the skinny, my loves. Apologies it’s taken so long for the 2nd volume to make it’s way to you. I promise, it’s worth the wait. Nothing has changed, it’s still so close to my heart. Unrelated to The God Machine, I also have another announcement that’s not just ready to see the light of day… yet. What could it be?!?!?! Ah! The constant tension! ;D

Coloring & Mice Templar Vol IV #1 goes on sale tomorrow!

From The God Machine Art by me, Chandra Free!

From The God Machine Art by me, Chandra Free!

I’ve been known to dabble in the dark arts [aka COLORING] for my own comic, The God Machine, and also for a book called, Sullengrey. Both of those projects are fully painted beasts. Meticulous in detail, everything is considered- from skin colors [i.e.- Olivey pale to convey Italian/french origins, pinky flesh to show Irish origins, brown/tan to show African/Indian origins..etc] –to mood lighting with color choices to change a scene from dread to delight. This is not work for the faint of heart! [It’ll also drive you nuts if you’re a perfectionist, too.]

Recently I’ve been recruited to lend my coloring talents to the alternate covers of Mice Templar, and even some pages in the first issue of the 4th volume of the saga.

Unlike my previous experience in coloring this was more in line with traditional coloring in comics [i.e. straightforward colors, simple shading, and a hint of texture for the background] — but the trick for me was to match the previous colorist’s style and color choices so the pages wouldn’t be too jarring. To meet deadline, Bryan JL Glass brought me in to color theses last couple of pages that Michael Oeming had done for the opening part of this chapter. Time was ticking, and I had 3 days to rise to the occasion to help my pals/colleagues out!

Now, the fortunate thing for me coming in at the last second to finish up the first set of pages in Mice Templar was that it was the end of the chapter where very dramatic/epic things were taking place, so pumping up the colors to either be more detailed or grand wasn’t going to be a problem at all. [Which, admittedly, I like to over do coloring a bit… >_>;;]

One of the pages I did must have had about 12 major mice-cast members with distinctive colors for each. To keep them on model I color sampled from previous issues of Mice Templar. It’s important to do this to keep every character looking like they should so you don’t confuse the audience as they turn the page or even read the next panel. Consistency with the background colors is also as important as staying on model. Scenes need to flow, or otherwise it can be disorienting and throw the reader off from the flow of the story. Of course characters colors will change pending on light sources [i.e. A sunset will cast oranges on the characters, where nighttime will cast blues or dark hues and all colors change accordingly, and so on~] but with a project like Mice Templar the characters colors rarely change to help the reader identify such a large cast of mice.

So, after I was done with these pages I was brought on to do the color for the B covers from issue 3 and so on! I’ll post those covers when it’s close to their release times. 🙂

Tomorrow [for Comic Wednesday] the issue with my few pages goes on sale and makes for Mice Templar’s triumphant return!

Here’s the skinny:

Cover A by Oeming — Cover B by Santos and Gandini

Long ago, the valiant Templar destroyed themselves through a vicious civil war, allowing the bloodthirsty crusade of the tyrant king Icarus to destroy mouse culture. Yet the inspiring tale of the young mouse Karic promises to restore the fractured Templar and overthrow the mad king. But while some accept Karic as a prophecy for good, still others see his rising legend as an omen of evil.

Thus begins the climactic chapter in the epic saga of hope and despair, of tragedy and triumph, and where every secret will at last be revealed.

OUT TOMORROW, April 3rd, 2013

Go forth to your local comic shop and pick it up! :3

Anyways, color- it’s hard AND important. This probably won’t be the first time I talk about color [there’s so much to say on color theory and all that rut.]

Til later~

Go-go gaget “publish,”

An Introduction~

It’s me and the best Bender cosplay i’ve ever seen at ECCC13.

Greetings and salutations Ladies & Gents of the inter-verse~! [Inter-verse… I’m not sure if I like the sound of that…]

I’m your ghost host, wait… no.

I’m Chandra Free! [there we go] ~your not-so-typical artist/writer comic maker- gal.  I do a spooky graphic novel series called, THE GOD MACHINE [published by Archaia] and a slew of other projects.

So!  For the longest time I’ve been wanting to do a blog that covers more of the professional side of comics- like the process in which it takes to make comics, art, writing, events, conventions, etc! Even cover my projects as I’m working on them, and talk about other creators and what they’re up to!  If this blog goes right, I’d like to talk on health of creators, food & places to visit while on the convention scene, convention reports, style & presentation, and various pop culture things as they relate to the industry. [Hopefully I will not deviate too far off topic!]

That’s my little introduction for now!

If there are any topics you’d like to see me cover in my blog, relating to comics, [i.e. How do you letter?  Females in comics and what that means? What’s the deal with CYMK? Art before process? DeviantART? etc] let me know! I want to help bring light to things that are not always so visible in this industry, plus input is always nice! 😉

Til’ next time GADGET… mmmrrrrrrow!

p.s. This weekend [April 6-7, 2013] me & the BLAM! Ventures crew are going to Reading, PA for Comic Geek Speak’s Super Show!
